Ph.D. in the Social and Physical Human-Robot Interaction Lab (SaPHaRI Lab) this upcoming academic calendar year (Spring/Fall 2025) in the ECSE Department at Case Western Reserve University.
Lab focus: The SaPHaRI Lab designs, builds, programs, and studies complex robotic systems that interact socially and physically with humans. In particular, we focus on creating innovative technologies that enhance human well-being through empathetic, responsive robots. We have projects spanning from developing haptic and physiological technologies for HRI to technology-mediated socio-emotional connections and developing novel robots for emotion regulation. Examples of past work in these areas conducted by researchers in the lab include the design and evaluation of HuggieBot, a novel interactive hugging robot with visual and haptic perception.
Our lab is part of the Human Fusions Institute (HFI) here at Case Western Reserve University. HFI is a multi-disciplinary effort focusing on human-centered, socially responsible design and technologies. We benefit from the close collaboration and support of research groups from various fields in engineering and beyond, both within and outside our university. Additionally, we will have space in a brand-new 22,568-square-foot lab and work space solely dedicated to HFI!
Ideal applicants: Applicants are expected to have a background in CS, EE, ME, or related areas (at least a bachelor’s degree). The quality of the applicant is more important than the specific background. Programming and hardware experience are highly valued, along with excellent communication skills. Relevant research experience is a benefit!
How to apply: Interested students should submit their applications through the CWRU ECSE system and directly contact Dr. Block at [email protected]. In the email, please attach your CV, transcript, cover letter outlining your research interests, and any other documents that best illustrate your capabilities (e.g., prior publications).
