С 16 по 26 января в Нигерии шли ожесточённые бои между боевиками ИГ и армией, которая пыталась вытеснить террористов из р-на Тимбукту в штате Борно. Однако операция завершилась неудачей. После десяти дней интенсивных столкновений и последней засады, в результате которой 130 солдат, вкл. бригадного генерала, погибли или получили ранения, а 12 транспортных средств были уничтожены, военные были вынуждены отступить в Майдугури и вернуться на базы.

В соцсетях распространилось видео с телефона одного из погибших военных. Запись заканчивается взрывом смертника и, вероятно, относится к 23 января.

Боевики МТО заявили, что намерены «вырвать города из рук» военных, предупредив, что дальнейшие потери могут вызвать волну дезертирства среди солдат.
