Western Northern Carolinan Thomas Clingman was another Southerner from Appalachia who sided with the Confederacy. He was a pre-war Congressmen who’d become a leader of the secessionist faction in the state in 1861. He also had quite the stylish sword which featured a lions head.
The cause of the Southern Agrarians was “the cause of civilized society, as we have known it in the Western world, against the new barbarism of science and technology controlled and directed by the modern power state. In this sense, the cause of the South was and is the cause of Western civilization itself.”
