Canadians, Europeans and Antipodeans are generally happy and grateful to receive support from dissident Americans, but not if it turns us all into a liberal democratic, individualist Tower of Babel, where a piece of paper and economic zones define nations.

What’s going on in Australia?

These anti-immigrant rallies always seem to follow the same script. You get a charcuterie board of factions: the apolitical crowd, frustrated with the cost of living and traffic congestion; the mild patriots, usually reactionary liberals longing for the “good old days” of 2002; the boomer populists, often MAGA-inspired, who yearn for a mythical 1970s of demographic supermajority and high-trust homogeneity (though they’ll never say it outright); the ethnic nationalists, who at least articulate a vision of the nation’s character, history, and heroes; and finally, the outright Hitlerists.

What always happens is that each moderate faction spends more time attacking the group just to their right, escalating in intensity the further right it goes, than they ever do confronting the left.
