What makes you think you’re Canadian just because you’re White?

This is a timeline of multiculturalism and mass immigration in Canada, intended to provide context.

The shift was a deliberate restructuring of Canadian identity, implemented from the top down through orders-in-council, against almost a century of public opinion polls that were against immigration of any kind, with the exception of British and French.

Initially, immigration focused on European groups, to ease Canadians into it, such as Eastern and Southern Europeans, before gradually expanding to include non-European populations.

Perhaps unexpectedly, it was Prime Minister John Diefenbaker who ended the longstanding preference for immigrants of British and French origin, the two founding groups of the Canadian majority.

White ethnic immigration from the 1960s onward was the result of liberal policies aimed at gradually changing Canada’s demographics. This happened around the same time the government officially rejected assimilation in 1971, when multiculturalism became policy.

The Southern and Eastern Europeans who came during this period had no link to earlier European settlers, like the small group of German mercenaries who settled in Ontario long ago.

The cultural mosaic and official multiculturalism began with foreign white immigrants.
