رجع الملك إلى قصره في ليلة شديدة البرودة، ورأى حارسًا عجوزًا واقفًا بملابس رقيقة. فاقترب منه الملك وسأله: ألا تشعر بالبرد. فردّ الحارس: نعم أشعر بالبرد، ولكنّي لا أمتلك لباس دافئ، فلا مناص لي من التحمّل. فقال له الملك: سأدخل القصر الآن وأطلب من أحد خدمي أن يأتيك بلباس دافئ. فرح الحارس بوعد الملك، ولكن ما أن دخل الملك قصره حتى نسي وعده. وفي الصباح كان الحارس العجوز قد فارق الحياة وإلى جانبه ورقة كتب عليها بخط مرتجف: "أيّها الملك، كنت أتحمّل البرد كل ليلة صامدًا، ولكن وعدك لي بالملابس الدافئة سلب منّي قوّتي وقتلني". وعودك للآخرين قد تعني لهم أكثر مما تتصوّر. فلا تخلف وعدًا، فأنت لا تدري ما تهدم بذلك
