مغز ما شبیه به یک GPS عمل می‌کند، زیرا دارای شبکه‌ای از سلول‌های عصبی است که در موقعیت‌یابی و حرکت نقش دارند. این عملکرد عمدتاً به وسیله‌ی سلول‌های مکانی (Place Cells)، سلول‌های شبکه‌ای (Grid Cells) و سلول‌های جهت‌سر (Head-Direction Cells) انجام می‌شود که در هیپوکامپ و قشر انتورینال (قسمتی از مغز مرتبط با حافظه و جهت‌یابی) قرار دارند.
سلول‌های مکانی زمانی که در یک مکان خاص هستید، فعال می‌شوند و مختصات مکانی شما را در محیط ثبت می‌کنند.
سلول‌های شبکه‌ای به مغز کمک می‌کنند مسیرها را به شکل یک شبکه شش‌ضلعی نقشه‌برداری کند و برای پیمایش در فضا ضروری هستند.
سلول‌های جهت‌سر این سلول‌ها مشخص می‌کنند که سر شما به کدام جهت اشاره می‌کند.
