Individuals who harm a child were taken very seriously during Pagan Europe. Any person(s) who was found harming a child, was not only seen as harming them, but also the community and the divine.

Children were seen as the future of a tribe. They represented innocence, youth and life. A gift from the gods and when an offender has been found harming a being so sacred, this was seen as a very grave violation.

Even the family and friends of the offender would face ostracism, displacement, public shaming, fines and loss of property.

The tribe’s bloodlust and need to restore the sacred harmony of the community would have been frenzied. The offender(s) would’ve have been:
1. Mutilated and tortured- the offender would have received slow, long and agonising torture and gruesome mutilation such as; cutting off limbs, genitalia, impalement, blinding and deafening and skinning etc. Then the offender is made to live in their new condition.
2. Thrown into the bogs- pagans saw the bogs as a form of a spiritual limbo.
3. Drowning
4. Execution
5. Sacrifice- to appease the gods and the tribe, the offender may be offered as a sacrifice to certain gods such as Nemesis and Morrigan, the gods of vengeance and divine justice in hope to appease their anger and quench their vengeful thirst by ensuring justice was served by such an offering.
6. Branding/scaring

If severe punishment was not given to the offender, or not harsh enough, the tribe would lose favour with the gods and would view any future negative happenings in reaction to that.

Other tribes would view them with disgrace and any future alliances and relationships would be severed. In some cases, the tribe would be vulnerable to an attack and isolation which put pressure on all peoples with that tribe to act upon any horrific violation.

Our Pagan ancestors were brutal, bloodthirsty and intolerant. They were deadly and they knew what must be done.

That’s what it means to be Pagan. Can you say the same?

Greek-speaking Anatolians during the Roman/Byzantine era as well as before then were not ethnically Greek and are more genetically similar to modern Turks (but without the Central Asian ancestry that modern Turks have).
