Ever since I can remember (& according to my parents even before ) I've been obsessed with both WW1 & WW2. With both wars, even up until today, the more I learn, the more unimaginable & incompressible I find them. Especially WW1, an industrial scale slaughter.
These images are from the "Body Density Maps" 1918 which show the deaths upon the ground from the Battle of the Somme 1916. Built of 6x6 grids (which represents 1000x1000 yards each), containing 36 squares (representing 166x166 yards), & a single small square being 83 yards.
So, let's take the 'S' grid number '11' that's; 749+207+234+126 = 1,416 deaths in just 166x166 yards, 749! deaths in a 83 yard square...
When I do Warbow 'flagging' shoots, we use 100yrds as our starting distance, I find it astounding to picture one could walk across that many corpses in that shockingly short distance. The fact a Warbow can shoot an arrow roughly 1000yrds, is even more inconceivable.
