How a Punk Antifascist Escaped Russian Occupation in Ukraine

Enerhodar is a city in southern Ukraine, located near the occupied Crimea, from where Russia launched its offensive. Since Ukraine did not expect a full-scale invasion, the city was captured during the first week of the war, despite massive civilian resistance.
🦠In the city there is Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant - the largest nuclear power plant in Europe and the ninth largest in the world.
☠️ During the city’s capture, the Russian army fired towards the nuclear power plant itself, endangering nuclear safety not only in Ukraine but across the entire continent. Buildings near the plant were hit, fires broke out, and there was a real threat of shells hitting nuclear material storage. For the first time in world history, active combat took place in the immediate vicinity of an operating nuclear power plant — and Russia was responsible.
🪓 The occupation of Enerhodar was accompanied by mass repressions: filtration, interrogations, confiscation of phones, and persecution of anyone who appeared disloyal.
✊ We spoke with one of those who managed to escape — a Ukrainian punk and antifascist who survived the occupation and fled to Europe. For safety reasons, he asked to remain anonymous. His story is a vivid testimony of what life under Russian occupation looked like.

У лютому 2023 р. в Будапешті проходив щорічний «День вшанування пам’яті» нацистів, які загинули під час облоги Будапешта радянською армією у 1945 р. Групи антифашист_ок організували контрзаходи на знак протесту.
Одн_ієою з учасни_ць були антифашист_ка Майя Т. Рішення про нелегальну екстрадицію активіст_ки в Угорщину стало одним із найсуперечливіших у Німеччині за останні роки.
Майю обвинувачують у влаштуванні атак на імовірних неонацистів. Майя перебувають в одиночному увʼязненні в Будапешті, починаючи з червня 2024 р. Антифашист_ці загрожує термін до 24 років.
Цього року Федеральний конституційний суд Німеччини постановив, що умови цієї екстрадиції були неприйнятними.
У лютому почалися засідання з цього приводу. На суді 21 лютого активіст_ка виступили із промовою, а також недвозначно згадали російську воєнну агресію:
«Посеред Європи все ще триває імперська війна, і майже неможливо ігнорувати той факт, що фашизм та його послідовники знову здобувають владу, чи то на нібито далекому континенті, чи то на сусідньому городі. In February 2023 Budapest annual “Honor day” in commemoration of Nazis who perished in the siege of Budapest by the Soviet army in 1945 took place. Groups of antifascists organised countermobilization to protest this action.
One of the participants was antifascist Maja T, the illegal extradition of whom to Hungary became one of the most controversial in Germany in the last years.
Maja is accused in organised attacks on alleged neo-nazis. Maja is currently held in solitary confinement in Budapest, since extradition in June 2024, and can face up to 24 years in prison.
This year, the Federal Constitutional Court of Germany ruled that the conditions of this extradition were unacceptable.
February this year hearings regarding this started. On February 21 activist gave a speech, in which Maja touched on the matter of russian war aggression:
“There is still an imperial war raging in the middle of Europe and it’s almost impossible to ignore the fact that fascism and its followers are once again gaining power, whether on a supposedly distant continent or in the neighboring garden. Totalitarian yearnings and authoritarian entanglements in our societies, exclusion and isolation are experiencing a renaissance. I wonder what will happen if everyone just saves themselves? Is this how we escape collective powerlessness? Where will fear and despair drive us?”
On June 5th, protesting against the conditions of confinement, Maja announced going on a hunger strike.
Father of antifascist is convinced it is a political and not criminal case.

Після майже чотирьох років за ґратами білоруська держава випустила анархіста Акіхіро Гаєвського-Ханаду — одного з фігурантів справи «Революційної Дії». Його та ще 13 політв’язнів звільнили 21 червня — невдовзі після візиту до Мінська Кіта Келлога, представника Дональда Трампа. Серед звільнених — і опозиціонер Сергій Тихановський.
Втім, за ґратами залишаються тисячі інших — анархістів, активістів, журналістів, які стали заручниками режиму Лукашенка. Їхні імена не фігурують у дипломатичних переговорах — але ми про них не забуваємо.

For those outside of Ukraine — especially those without direct ties to the Ukrainian context — you may find yourself asking : “Are there still missile strikes?” Even if the presence of war may be acknowledged, the ongoing reality of civilian casualties can be frequently overlooked, if not forgotten.
According to UN statistics, civilian deaths in the first quarter of 2025 were 59% higher than in the same period of 2024.
This post is a reminder that the horror continues. Shellings occur almost daily, and the bodies of civilians, including children, continue to be found among the rubble of collapsed buildings.
Between April and May 2025 alone, civilian casualties were reported in 17 of Ukraine’s 24 regions, as well as in the capital city of Kyiv — including areas far from the frontlines.
Each number in these images represents a real person. These were people who were peacefully sleeping or going to work. People who wanted to live and did nothing to provoke the constant aerial bombardment that continues to rain down upon their communities. People who live under the constant fear of death.

Комплект, який ми замовили, коштував 1 170 000 грн.
Дрон уже встиг зробити кілька вильотів на Слобожанщині — виявив техніку та позиції ворога.
Детальний звіт з чеками та відео-зверненням від бійців плануємо опублікувати в серпні.
Окремо хочемо відзначити ініціативи, без яких цей БПЛА не був би придбаний:
— ABC Dresden, які завжди готові підтримати збори на антиавторитарних бійців;

In June, Solidarity Collectives, together with GNIP and partners, delivered a “Sych” UAV to one of the aerial reconnaissance groups.
The drone package we ordered cost 1,170,000 UAH.
The drone has already completed several missions in the Slobozhanshchyna region — identifying enemy equipment and positions.
We plan to publish a detailed report with receipts and a video message from the fighters in August.
We want to give special thanks to the initiatives without which this UAV would not have been purchased:
— ABC Dresden, who are always ready to support fundraising for anti-authoritarian fighters;
— Resistance Support Club, one of our drone fundraising partners who also joined the campaign for this UAV;
— Riot Over River festival, which raised €1560 during their event;
— AFED, a collective from Czechia;

We plan to publish a detailed report with receipts and a video message from the fighters in August.
