Во время выполнения боевой задачи в самолёт попала ракета ПЗРК. После этого экипаж принял решение направить объятый огнём самолёт на бронетанковую колонну.

За несколько секунд до столкновения истребителя с колонной в эфире прозвучали легендарные слова Антонова: "Встречайте, суки, папу!".

Александр Антонов и Владимир Никишин были удостоены звания Герои России (посмертно).
