🇬🇧 The Solidarity Collectives are turning 2

On Sunday, we marked 2 years of the Solidarity Collectives. And it was great! We thank everyone who attended. It was incredibly nice to meet so many friends and supporters of our initiative in the same place and talk to everyone in person.

It wasn’t easy to organize such an event, but by collective effort and volunteer help, in the end we did almost everything we set out to do. Thanks to our comrades from FemSolution, a free market was open during the entire event. So our visitors, among whom there were many IDPs, were able to find some things they needed. And in another location, people could buy the merch of Solidarity Collectives and our partners.

In the Cult of Motive hall, there was an exhibition of photos by Ksiusha Kozeniuk and Olexiy Prytugin from our humanitarian trips to frontline areas. There was also a tattoo corner, where Abrykos Abrykosovyi did tattoos for donations. And our drone workshop taught 2 soldering masterclasses.

The event was accompanied by music by amazing Kyiv musicians, Mariettta Eater, Roman P, Demian Feriy and Oleksandr Yeltsin.

The event concluded with a discussion about self-organization in Ukrainian society and army during the war. Its participants included members of FreeFilmers, Street Aid Daily, Ukrainian Feminist Network, Direct Action as well as fighters from the EcoPlatform and the Resistance Committee. Unfortunately, for technical reasons we were unable to set up a livestream, but we will definitely publish a recording.

On this day, we heard many nice words. But all of our successes are a collective effort by hundreds (if not thousands) of people who have been supporting the work of the Solidarity Collectives for two years now. Every tourniquet sent to our fighters, every trip to Donbas, every screw in a drone has been paid for by the collective effort of anti-authoritarian initiatives and just engaged people from all over the world. That is, by you. Because we are also you! And we are not going to stop.

This ability to mix the public and the private, as well as the ability to use bots to engage with users has proved to be problematic. In early 2021, a database selling phone numbers pulled from Facebook was selling numbers for $20 per lookup. Similarly, security researchers found a network of deepfake bots on the platform that were generating images of people submitted by users to create non-consensual imagery, some of which involved children. "And that set off kind of a battle royale for control of the platform that Durov eventually lost," said Nathalie Maréchal of the Washington advocacy group Ranking Digital Rights. Emerson Brooking, a disinformation expert at the Atlantic Council's Digital Forensic Research Lab, said: "Back in the Wild West period of content moderation, like 2014 or 2015, maybe they could have gotten away with it, but it stands in marked contrast with how other companies run themselves today." The S&P 500 fell 1.3% to 4,204.36, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 0.7% to 32,943.33. The Dow posted a fifth straight weekly loss — its longest losing streak since 2019. The Nasdaq Composite tumbled 2.2% to 12,843.81. Though all three indexes opened in the green, stocks took a turn after a new report showed U.S. consumer sentiment deteriorated more than expected in early March as consumers' inflation expectations soared to the highest since 1981.
