Fenian raids were a common problem for late colonial and early Confederation Canada. Back in the 1870s, my own ancestors had to travel through the US when homesteading to avoid them attacking them when moving out West from Ontario, before reentering Canada in Alberta.

The Fenians attacked civilian homesteaders as an attempt to hurt Britain so it would give Ireland freedom from the UK. As these particular ancestors of mine were Scots-Irish Protestants, they would likely have been prime candidates for attack, so all the more reason to avoid them.

Forces like the one pictured here would have been scattered throughout Canada then, but considering the vast size of the terrain, they’d have a great deal of difficulty stopping these raids. Seymour is now more notable as the name one of the main roads in downtown Vancouver.
