3 февраля 2018 года штурмовик Су-25СМ, за штурвалом которого находился Роман Филипов, возвращался после выполнения облета зоны деэскалации «Идлиб» и был сбит огнем террористов с земли из переносного зенитного ракетного комплекса.
Летчик попытался удержать самолет в воздухе, отводя машину от жилых строений, после чего катапультировался. На земле майор Роман Филипов попал в окружение боевиков, до последнего вел неравный бой с противником, был тяжело ранен и при приближении врага на минимальное расстояние подорвал себя гранатой со словами «Это вам за пацанов!».
