Евгений Родионов был призван на срочную службу 25 июня 1995 года в погранвойска. В январе 1996 года был направлен на административную границу с Чечней, где спустя месяц был захвачен боевиками в плен со своими сослуживцами.
После более трёх месяцев плена и жестоких пыток Евгению было предложено снять нательный крест и принять ислам. Как потом признался чеченский боевик Руслан Хайхороев:
«…У него был выбор, чтобы остаться в живых. Он мог бы веру сменить, но он не захотел с себя креста снимать. Бежать пытался…»
23 мая в свой 19-ый день рождения на православный праздник Вознесения Господня Евгений Родионов отказался снять крест, за что был обезглавлен чеченскими террористами.
Евгения Родионова чтут и почитают не только в России.
Евгений Родионов является местночтимым святым в Астраханской митрополии и Сербии.
В мае 2011 года включён как «новомученик Евгений Воин» в воинскую панихиду, рекомендованную православным капелланам армии Соединённых Штатов Америки для совершения поминовения погибших воинов.
