Это был прообраз нынешнего торгового центра: чего здесь только не было в 1930-е — столовая для рабочих восьми московских заводов, магазин, рабочее кафе, почта, телеграф, телефон, сберкасса. Самая первая в Москве фабрика-кухня имела механический конвейер для мытья посуды.
Здание было построено в 1929-м по проекту Алексея Ивановича Мешкова. Тот год был пиком конструктивизма в СССР. К сожалению, испытание временем, климатом и советским бытом почти ни один конструктивистский памятник не прошел: ленточное остекление, открытые террасы-палубы, крыши-солярии, стеклянные галереи — все застраивалось, убиралось и закрывалось.
В 1950-е здесь разместился ресторан «Спорт». Его быстро облюбовали стиляги, и ресторан пришлось прикрыть. Теперь тут институт прикладной механики.
