They now run it from Dubai, and Pavel Durov says it has more than 500 million monthly active users. The next bit isn’t clear, but Durov reportedly claimed that his resignation, dated March 21st, was an April Fools’ prank. For example, WhatsApp restricted the number of times a user could forward something, and developed automated systems that detect and flag objectionable content. "He has kind of an old-school cyber-libertarian world view where technology is there to set you free," Maréchal said.
