По версии следствия, Евгений Митин перебрал со спиртным, поругался с рабочим Василием Бирюковым и во время ссоры взял оружие — украл в доме Романа Гольдмана. Из него Митин выстрелил в спину коллеги. Бирюков, спасаясь, забежал к соседу и рассказал о нападении.
Тот взял карабин Мосина и направился к двери — закрыть. Евгений был на пороге, тогда он оттолкнул нападавшего и выстрелил через дверь. Мужчина погиб на месте. На нём две статьи — за хищение боеприпасов и покушение на убийство.
