بسته به اینکه چه منظری در شناسایی علم برگزیده شود ، مکتبهای مختلف روش‌شناسی به وجود می‌آیند . سوال مهم این است که آیا در بازشناسی علم و تبیین روش شناسی آن باید به ارگانیسم و سازوکار درونی علم توجه شود ؟( رویکرد تحلیلی-منطقی ) یا به سیر تاریخی و مسیر رشد آن (رویکرد تاریخی- جامعه شناختی)
به همین دلیل مکاتب و نحله های روش‌شناسی علوم را به دو گروه کلی زیر می توان تقسیم کرد که هر کدام نیز به انواعی قابل تقسیم هستند :
