Paspilkoff, the settler in question, was quoted in 1867 whilst creating a memorial cross for the American naturalist Robert Kennicott, who had died of a heart attack the previous year. As one of only three Russians living at the trading post of Nulato (Western Alaska), he would later accompany the book's author on a trip up the Yukon River, only to return home later that month
