Если мы читаем Писание, не оправдываем себя, не жалеем себя, то этот светильник ярче и ярче озаряет наш путь, избавляя от сложности выбора и тревог за будущее. Но если нам хочется потакать своим вредным привычкам, то совесть в этом случае только раздражает нас, отчего хочется всеми силами ее заглушить или и вовсе исказить, чтобы она не путь к Истине нам указывала, а наоборот удаляла от верного пути. Об этом много веков назад писал святитель Василий Великий: «Если не слушаемся совести, то наш светильник, сияющий за завесою (воли греховной), показывает вещи уже темнее и темнее, и как в помутневшей воде от многого ила мы не узнаем в ней лица своего.»
