شعار امسال سازمان جهانی بهداشت "تشخیص زودهنگام، اقدام زودهنگام، برای جوامعی سالم‌تر" است .
با توجه به تجربیات اخیر از جمله پاندمی COVID-19، اهمیت آمادگی برای مقابله با اپیدمی‌ها بیش از پیش مورد توجه قرار گرفته است و پس از همه گیری کرونا روز جهانی آمادگی برای مبارزه با اپیدمی برای نخستین بار در ۲۰۲۰ برگزار شد.
هدف از این روز، تشویق کشورها به سرمایه‌گذاری در سیستم‌های بهداشتی، آموزش عمومی درباره بیماری‌ها و ارتقاء همکاری‌های بین‌المللی برای مقابله با تهدیدات بهداشتی جهانی است. همچنین این روز یادآور اهمیت تحقیق و توسعه واکسن‌ها و درمان‌های مؤثر برای کنترل شیوع بیماری‌هاست.
