Reader Mode in Telegram's In-App Browser

In the Beta version of Telegram for Android 11.1, the built-in browser has been updated with an "Instant View" button. In many browsers, this feature is known as "reader mode" or "simplified mode" — it removes the site's styling, hides pop-ups and other distractions, leaving only the text and media on the current page.

This feature is similar to Instant View, that sometimes appears below links in messages. Instant View in messages continues to work as before.

To use the new feature, follow these steps:
1. Enable the built-in browser in "Settings › Chat Settings."
2. Tap on a webpage link in a chat.
3. Tap the three dots in the top right corner of the screen and select "Instant View." If the button is inactive or missing, reader mode is not available for the current page.

Here are some key details about the new feature:
• The "Instant View" button in Telegram's built-in browser works on many arbitrary pages. It doesn't require pre-designed templates to function; the Telegram app automatically strips non-essential elements from the page. However, if a site already has a specific Instant View template, the app will use that instead.
• To use reader mode, you need to load the full version of the page in Telegram's browser first, and then activate the feature.

The @tginfo team emphasizes that despite having the same names in the app's interface, the reader mode in Telegram's browser is a separate feature from the existing Instant View mode.

"Russians are really disconnected from the reality of what happening to their country," Andrey said. "So Telegram has become essential for understanding what's going on to the Russian-speaking world." Stocks dropped on Friday afternoon, as gains made earlier in the day on hopes for diplomatic progress between Russia and Ukraine turned to losses. Technology stocks were hit particularly hard by higher bond yields. Again, in contrast to Facebook, Google and Twitter, Telegram's founder Pavel Durov runs his company in relative secrecy from Dubai. He said that since his platform does not have the capacity to check all channels, it may restrict some in Russia and Ukraine "for the duration of the conflict," but then reversed course hours later after many users complained that Telegram was an important source of information. The account, "War on Fakes," was created on February 24, the same day Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a "special military operation" and troops began invading Ukraine. The page is rife with disinformation, according to The Atlantic Council's Digital Forensic Research Lab, which studies digital extremism and published a report examining the channel.
