(Part 1/2) A few days ago a friend of mine told me the interesting etymology of his favorite Ukrainian word "філіжанка" which I would like to share with y'all today)
As it turns out, "філіжанка", meaning "tea or coffee cup" isn't like your average Slavic word that boringly descends from a Proto-Slavic form which then evolved over the centuries. No, not at all! This term has actually traveled the globe, hailing from a land most of our forefathers weren't even aware of)
Our story starts in the Middle East, with the Classical Persian word پنگان (pengân), meaning: cup, bowl and water clock. This was then borrowed by Arabic فنجان (finjān), where it only meant "cup". This was then reborrowed by Persian as فنجان (fenjân), this time only meaning "cup", unlike the earlier Classical Persian form.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said in a video message on Tuesday that Ukrainian forces "destroy the invaders wherever we can." A Russian Telegram channel with over 700,000 followers is spreading disinformation about Russia's invasion of Ukraine under the guise of providing "objective information" and fact-checking fake news. Its influence extends beyond the platform, with major Russian publications, government officials, and journalists citing the page's posts. Telegram was co-founded by Pavel and Nikolai Durov, the brothers who had previously created VKontakte. VK is Russia’s equivalent of Facebook, a social network used for public and private messaging, audio and video sharing as well as online gaming. In January, SimpleWeb reported that VK was Russia’s fourth most-visited website, after Yandex, YouTube and Google’s Russian-language homepage. In 2016, Forbes’ Michael Solomon described Pavel Durov (pictured, below) as the “Mark Zuckerberg of Russia.” On December 23rd, 2020, Pavel Durov posted to his channel that the company would need to start generating revenue. In early 2021, he added that any advertising on the platform would not use user data for targeting, and that it would be focused on “large one-to-many channels.” He pledged that ads would be “non-intrusive” and that most users would simply not notice any change. To that end, when files are actively downloading, a new icon now appears in the Search bar that users can tap to view and manage downloads, pause and resume all downloads or just individual items, and select one to increase its priority or view it in a chat.
