При заходе на посадку экипаж пассажирского лайнера сначала наблюдал небольшой самолёт, однако спустя несколько минут потерял его из виду и не сообщил об этом диспетчеру. После срабатывания системы об опасном сближении Cessna 172 врезалась в правое крыло и взорвалась. Взрыв повредил топливный бак, механизацию и гидравлическую систему. Менее чем через минуту Boeing врезался в жилой квартал.
