Премьера сказочного балета «Щелкунчик» состоялась в 1892 году в один вечер с премьерой последней (и самой загадочной) оперы Чайковского «Иоланта» в Мариинском театре в Санкт-Петербурге. Идея соединить в один вечер одноактную оперу и двухактный балет принадлежит директору императорских театров Ивану Всеволожскому.

Самыми известными постановщиками «Щелкунчика» стали Лев Иванов (автор хореографии по балетному плану Мариуса Петипа), Василий Вайнонен, Джордж Баланчин, Юрий Григорович, Рудольф Нуреев, Джон Ноймайер, Михаил Барышников, Морис Бежар и Мэтью Борн.

Именно версию Григоровича с исторической сцены Большого театра мы покажем в кино 30 и 31 декабря.
