Комплексная морская арктическая геолого-геофизическая экспедиция (КМАГЭ) была создана в составе Северного морского научно-производственного геолого-геофизического объединения («Севморгео») Министерства геологии СССР. В 1981 году переименована в Морскую арктическую геологоразведочную экспедицию (МАГЭ).
Первым руководителем МАГЭ был гидрограф Николай Трубятчинский.
Организация занимается изучением строения шельфовых морей, транзитных и прибрежных зон Арктики и Мирового океана. Специалисты МАГЭ уже более 50 лет изучают Шпицбергенский шельф, высокоширотные районы Карского и Баренцева морей, море Лаптевых, Обскую губу.
