Так как этот локомотив является преемником электровоза 2ЭС10 с немецким тяговым приводом, то 3ЭС8 с отечественным тяговым приводом должен реализовывать схожие технические характеристики, что и было подтверждено, несмотря на то, что 2ЭС10 мощнее 3ЭС8 на 700 кВт.
