The Calm Before the Storm

In late September I went on a mom's retreat with our kids to the NC mountains. It was absolutely beautiful! The reference pictures used in this piece, were from photos I took with my phone while we were there. We were there for 3 nights and on the third day, the storm rolled in. On the third night, we all had to go to the basement because of a tornado warning in the area due to tropical storm Helene. We even debated on whether we should stay because of the roads flooding. We decided to leave as soon as the sun came up on our original checkout day. It turns out that if we had stayed any later than we did, we would've been stuck at our air bnb on a mountain with no food, water, no way out, and no way to call for help. We were very lucky, but it was definitely scary and my heart breaks for the people who weren't so lucky. πŸ’”

This trip and our narrow escape from Helene was the partial inspiration for this piece but not the only one. When we got back, one of my dear friends lost her husband suddenly just days after returning home and this was a week before the year anniversary of the death of my fiancΓ©. It was a really hard time all around. When thinking about our trip and how delicate our lives can be, the title of this piece came to me.

Ultimately "The Calm Before the Storm" is about the comfort we have before a major life change and how sometimes that comfort can feel concrete, like it will always be there. Nature often reminds us that isn't the case. The good thing about this is that although our comfort and our joy can't last forever, neither can our pain and sorrow.

The moth being the focal point of this piece represents just how beautiful, yet fragile and temporary life can be. It's important to appreciate the beauty of life and the experience of love when we can find it... and to show loved ones how important they are while they are here, instead of waiting until they're gone. This is something that can be all too easy to forget when caught up in the comfort of habitual daily routines. Thank you all for reading and for the support I've gotten with my art so far. It really means so much. ❀️πŸ”₯

Spent hours prepping a bunch of wood this morning for commissions and future original art pieces! It was cold, but at least the sun was out. Well worth it because now these pieces are smooth as glass and ready to have some art burned into them! πŸ”₯
Art is Nature self-reflecting through human eyes
Working on a portrait that should be ready and sent out just in time for Valentine's Day! Been working on the faces for the past 2 days very slowly and gradually building up shading so that I can avoid scorch marks. Sometimes smaller surfaces are actually more challenging because I don't have tips small enough for some of the areas (like the eyes). That's when the razor blade comes in handy.

This is my first personal project of the new year available for purchase.

In an effort to get back on track with last year's commission list, this piece will only be available to those who have already placed a deposit on a commission from me for the next week. If nobody on my list comes forward within that time, it will be listed to my website and reposted. I plan on doing this again with new pieces in the future.

This new piece features hand painted poppies and a rustic gilded design with divine feminine elements along the shelf. It is inspired by Demeter and a spirit of remembrance.

Materials: Black Walnut, acrylics, polymer

Finished this just in time for Valentine's Day! This portrait is hand burned on a medium birch wood round.

I still have a few slots left for commissions before they are closed! DM @solacecreationsus if interested.

Here is a progression video for my latest portrait. The faces, although a very small portion of surface area, took the longest. With portraits of people I have to very slowly build up the values of the skin at a low heat setting so that the shading is smooth. This way I can avoid scorch marks.

This guy's art is mind blowing! I love watching his process so I figured I'd share in case anyone else is interested in doing the same.

Creativity is inherently feminine and that is ok and quite frankly beautiful. Violence is inherently masculine and that is ok and beautiful. And it is important to be a well rounded person who can incorporate both creation and destruction within oneself.

"Creation and destruction are one to the eyes that can see beauty."

Don't become so obsessed with being perfectly within the role others think you should fit within that you ignore your own well roundedness and understanding of the world. You can be girly and love martial arts. You can be manly and write poetry.

Love life and live it and learn as much as you can, both viscerally and cerebrally.
