قوله: (وَإِذَا الْمَوْءُدَةُ سُئلَتْ )، يعني بنات الجاهلية، كانوا يدفنوهن أحياء، لخصلتين: إحداهما: كانوا يقولون إن الملائكة بنات الله، فألحقوا البنات به. الثانية : مخافة الحاجة والإملاق، وسؤال الموؤدة على وجه التوبيخ لقاتلها، كما يقال للطفل إذا ضرب: لم ضربت ؟ وما ذنبك ؟ وقال الحسن: أراد الله أن يوبخ قاتلها؛ لأنها قتلت بغير ذنب، وبعضهم يقرأ: وإذا الموؤدة سَألَت، تعلق الجارية بأبيها ، فتقول: بأي ذنب قتلتني ؟ وقيل: معنى سئلت، يسأل عنها كما قال : ( إِنَّ الْعَهْدَ كَانَ مَسْئُولًا ) ..
