On January 7, 2025, the 20th anniversary of Oury Jalloh's death, around 800 people gathered in front of Dessau Central Station in the early afternoon to commemorate the deceased and protest against the failure of the justice system to clear up the case.

The demonstration set off at around 3 p.m. and the demonstrators marched in front of the public prosecutor's office building, chanting “Blood, blood, blood on your hands”. Dozens had brought lighters, which they threw at the entrance to the court building. To this day, the same public prosecutor's office claims that Jalloh set fire to his mattress himself with a lighter that was overlooked during the search, although a large amount of evidence, proof, investigations and evidence refutes this assumption. A whole series of experts have ruled out suicide. However, the Federal Constitutional Court declared the case legally closed in February 2023. A complaint to the European Court of Human Rights was allegedly not received in Strasbourg within the deadline.

‘WHO DID YOU EXPLOIT TODAY?’

‘Who did you exploit today?’ That’s what Tahmel Morton asks men working on Wall Street in New York. Filmed as a comedy sketch for the MTV2 programme ‘Wonder Showzen,’ what makes it so funny is how it sheds light on a brutal yet taboo reality.

With its origins dating back to 1711, Wall Street emerged as none other than a slave market where stolen Africans were auctioned as cattle and commodities to the highest bidder. The founders and their descendants of top Wall Street financial institutions, such as Bank of America, Wells Fargo, Citibank, and JP Morgan (to name a few), made astronomically large sums of money through the labour of enslaved Africans in the US South, Cuba, and other Caribbean islands. And speaking about the US South, let’s not forget the US North.
