Фабрику основал в 1891 году купец Илья Давидович Пигит, этнический караим. Табачный бизнес в Москве царской эпохи крепко держали караимы. Например, ещё два крупных табачных фабриканта в Москве, Иосиф Дуван и Абрам Катык, были соплеменниками Пигита.
Строительство фабричного корпуса в переулке началось в 1903 году и продолжалось вплоть до начала войны 1914-го. Пигит организовал выпуск папирос и дешёвого табака, вплоть до махорки. В 1915 году он скончался. Из бизнеса он вышел за год до смерти. Управлял фабрикой до 1918 года его шурин Борух Исаакович Катлама. В 1918-м «Дукат» был национализирован советской властью и стал госфабрикой управления «Главтабак». Корпус на улице Гашека был снесён в конце 1990-х. На месте возведён бизнес-центр «Дукат плейс».
