Самой известной операцией, проведённой Ботяном, считается спасение Кракова от уничтожения фашистами в 1945 году. Он стал прототипом главного героя книги Юлиана Семёнова (и одноименного фильма) «Майор Вихрь», посвящённой тем событиям.

Родился в д. Чертовичи, Ошмянского уезда Виленской губернии Российской империи.

Скончался 13 февраля 2020 года на 104-м году жизни. Соболезнования в связи с кончиной выразил президент России Владимир Путин
