У свій час слово могло виникнути як синонім до головного псл. *mozgъ у звʼязку з виглядом мозку. Так, на основі характеристики "слизький" виникли також укр. глей, глива, глина, глист, глезень, глінь, глизявий ( піє. *glei- "липнути").
