На земной орбите сегодня насчитывается порядка 30 тысяч единиц космического мусора — фрагментов старых ракет и спутников. Способ защитить от них действующие космические аппараты нашли томские ученые.
Моделирование, проведенное в Институте физики прочности и материаловедения СО РАН, показало, что многослойные защитные экраны работают эффективнее монолитных. Столкновение с космическим мусором на скорости 10–15 км/сек полностью разрушает монолитную защиту, а экраны с разнесенными в пространстве слоями сохраняют до 20% своей структуры.
Полученные данные помогут улучшить защиту космических аппаратов и продлить их срок службы.

Given that Russian law enforcement officials are reportedly (via Insider) stopping people in the street and demanding to read their text messages, this could be vital to protect individuals from reprisals.
