Приехав из Будапешта в 1925 году, Кертес первым делом меняет венгерское имя Андор на более французское – Андре.

Фотограф знакомится с сюрреалистами и дадаистами, но сам не примыкает ни к какому художественному течению. Чтобы заработать на жизнь Кертес продает свои фото для почтовых открыток и снимает для разных журналов.

«Я называю себя любителем сегодня, и надеюсь остаться им до конца жизни. Потому что я всегда начинающий, я открываю мир снова и снова».
