Однажды патриарх Никон (в миру Никита Минин) задумал построить близ Москвы Новый Иерусалим. Было это в XVII веке. И не только задумал, но и построил Воскресенский Ново-Иерусалимский ставропигиальный мужской монастырь в славном городе Истре.

Основав в 1656 году эту обитель, патриарх-реформатор постарался сделать всё таким образом, что само это место своим пейзажем напоминало Израильские земли. Здесь имеется свои Храм Гроба Господня, Гефсиманский сад, Голгофа. Источник живой воды, ледяной и вкусной, зовется Силоам. А холм к востоку от него наименовали Елеоном.

В монастыре существовала библиотека, собранная по инициативе Никона. Её основу составили личные книги патриарха, греческие рукописи из афонских монастырей с текстами античных и раннехристианских авторов. Благодаря этой библиотеке до нас дошли древнейшие славянские летописи, хронографы, родословные книги, переводы иностранных книг. К концу XVII века здесь хранились около 600 книг.
