В 2018 году в городском правительстве говорили, что главная проблема этого направления — исчерпание пропускной способности для электричек из-за движения «Сапсанов». В 2024 году в Смольном уже сообщали, что после строительства ВСМ с линии уйдут «Сапсаны» и вместно них можно будет наладить тактовое движение электричек из Петербурга в Колпино и Тосно.
Но теперь, видимо. решили вернуться к идее строительства третьего и четвертого путей.
