Чеченцы, получили своё название это от русских, собственно от своего большого аула «Чачан» или «Чeчень». Сами чеченцы свою народность называют Нахчи или Нахчо, что значитъ люди из страны Нах или Ноах, т. е. Ноевой (страны), так как, по народным сказаниям, они пришли около IV в. по Р. Хр. в настоящее свое местожительство, чрез Абхазию, из местности Нахчи-Ван, с подножий Арарата (Эриванской губернии).
