Петр Николаевич Грузинский родился в 1837 году в Курске. После окончания Академии художеств в 1862 году, его отправляют в оплачиваемую государством поездку в Европу на целых шесть лет.
Но художник прерывает свое путешествие и возвращается в Россию, где в 1865 году отправляется на Кавказ с целью написания этюдов с натуры, изучения местных типов и собирания материалов для задуманной им батальной картины на тему Кавказкой войны. В горах изначальная задумка несколько видоизменилась, и в результате появилась эта картина, которая сейчас находится в Русском музее в Санкт-Петербурге.
Грузинский собирался написать картину к Всемирной парижской выставке 1867 года, но не успел. Окончательно вернувшись в Россию в 1872 году, за нее он получает звание академика, а саму картину через год отправляют на всемирную выставку в Вене.
Художник скончался в 1892 году, похоронен в Павловске.
