Ґодельє — один з найбільш крупних французьких антропологів досліджує процес виникнення, еволюції й трансформації племінних спільнот. Зокрема він звертає увагу на те, що племена не стали в новійшій історії анахронізмом, а навпаки, в світовій політиці початку XXI ст. деякі племені об'єднання грають зростаючу роль. Друга частина книги представляє собою інтерв'ю французького антрополога (листопад 2013, Париж), в якому він розкриває своє відношення до наукового спадку К. Леві-Стросса та розуміння ролі релігій з історією в сучасному світі. Третя частина книги — дослідження, в якому реконструюється інтелектуальна біографія й теорії релігії М. Ґодельє.
