2 травня 2022 року в місті Маріуполь внаслідок мінометного обстрілу комбінату «Азовсталь» загинув 28-річний лейтенант Національної поліції України Даніїл Сафонов.
Даніїл народився в Донецьку. У 2014 року переїхав до бабусі в Маріуполь. Згодом оселився в місті Теребовля на Тернопільщині.
Три роки за контрактом воював у зоні проведення АТО. Був артилеристом 44-ої окремої артилерійської бригади. Після служби повернувся до Маріуполя. У 2019 році вступив до лав патрульної поліції.
«Справжній. Чистий. Ідеаліст. Дуже правильний хлопець і світла людина. Ні в кого не йшов на поводі. Мав свої принципи. Розумні, трохи ідеалістичні, але для його віку це нормально. Він чітко їх дотримувався», – розповів голова патрульної поліції Маріуполя Михайло Вершинін, який разом із Даніїлом був на «Азовсталі».
Посмертно лейтенанту поліції Даніїлу Сафонову присвоєно звання Герой України з удостоєнням ордена «Золота Зірка».
