25 ноября 1913 года известный купец и благотворитель Алексей Александрович Бахрушин передал в дар Академии наук частный театральный музей, что располагался в собственном доме Алексея Александровича на Лужнецкой улице.
Музей был открыт в октябре 1894-го. Бахрушин любовно собирал экспонаты для него в течение многих лет. В 1896-м коллекция переехала в новый дом Бахрушина, возведённый по проекту архитектора Карла Карловича Гиппиуса. Москвичи прозвали его «Театральный Версаль на Зацепе».
После революции по предложению Ленина Бахрушин стал директором музея и пребывал в сём качестве до самой кончины в 1929-м. Ныне это Государственный центральный театральный музей имени Бахрушина. Бывшая Лужнецкая в 1959 году была переименована в улицу Бахрушина. Геометка.
