Причиной считается случайное убийство полицейскими чернокожего подростка, который сопротивлялся задержанию.

В первую ночь протеста были убиты 2 человека, 10 ранены. Более 50 торговых заведений повреждены или разворованы. Полиция и национальная гвардия сконцентрировала силы рядом с полицейским участком в районе Центр Бруклина, поэтому останавливать мародеров некому. Владельцы частного бизнеса лично охраняют его с оружием в руках.
