Впервые заменить сочетание «іо» одной буквой предложила княгиня Екатерина Дашкова в 1783 году. Придумывать ничего нового не стали и просто поставили две точки (это и носит название «умляут») над буквой «е».
Широко известной новая буква «ё» стала благодаря нашему историку Н. М. Карамзину. В 1797 году Николай Михайлович решил заменить при подготовке в печать одного из своих стихотворений две буквы в слове «слiозы» на одну букву «ё». Так, с лёгкой руки Карамзина буква «ё» и закрепилась в русском алфавите.
В Ульяновске на бульваре Новый Венец букве установлен знаменитый памятник.

Telegram has acted to remove public channels affiliated with terrorism, but Pavel Durov reiterated that he had no business snooping on private conversations. The message was not authentic, with the real Zelenskiy soon denying the claim on his official Telegram channel, but the incident highlighted a major problem: disinformation quickly spreads unchecked on the encrypted app.
