25 января 1943 года советскими войсками освобожден город Воронеж. Немецкое командование отводило на его захват 2-3 дня. 6 июля 1942 года они подошли к окраинам города, но так и не смогли полностью его захватить. В истории Великой Отечественной войны есть лишь два областных центра, по которым прошла линия фронта и которые немцам так и не удалось взять - Сталинград и Воронеж.

212 дней оборонялся город. Немцы практически стерли его с лица земли, но захватить так и не смогли. Немецкий военный корреспондент Густава Штебе, побывав в Воронеже, с ужасом описывал бесконечные немецкие кладбища: "Кресты немецких могил стоят повсюду, посреди разрушенного города, между сгоревшими фасадами домов и баррикадами, перед фабриками, на улицах и на берегу Дона…"
