Вообще-то Погар — это позднее название нашего города, данное ему при втором рождении на месте прежнего, сожженного дотла в одной из русско-литовских войн XVI в. А так изначально, в доказацкую эпоху, наш древний город назывался Радогощем (Радощем). Можно сколь угодно упражняться в этимологии, всë одно будут предположения.

Тем не менее, символизм — это людская болезнь, потому в Погарском краеведческом музее "Радогощ" с его девизом "Рады гостю" ожидаемо Погару (Радогощу), что на реке Судости (Судогости), сформировали целый foundation myth, основанный на имени упомянутого в средневековых хрониках предполагаемого бога полабско-балтийских славян — Радегаста (Радогоста).

В книге местных краеведов А.М. Луферова и С.Н. Бирюкова (сотрудника музея) "Погар. Страницы истории. 1155—2010" (Минск, 2010) поддерживается именно "западнославянская" гипотеза, а также воспроизводится гипотеза о том, что северяне тоже могли поклоняться этому богу.

Так что будете у нас в Погаре, не забудьте помолиться богу нашему Радогосту.
