Площадь разделена на три части Кутузовским проспектом, с севера и юга ограничена жилыми домами, а на востоке и западе чётких границ не имеет. Триумфальная арка, расположенная в центре площади, изначально располагалась на площади Белорусского вокзала, но при расширении Тверской улицы в 1930-х была демонтирована, и восстановлена по чертежам на новом месте уже в брежневские времена.
