2 ноября братья приняли участие в обороне Шуши. 7 ноября Геворг пал в бою, пытаясь дозвониться до младшего брата. Узнав о его гибели, Карапет отправился на поиски и спустя два часа нашел тело Геворга. Попав в окружение, он принял неравный бой и вскоре разделил судьбу брата.
Геворг и Карапет Мелконяны навсегда остались символом верности нации и Родине.
