Основна характерна риса кобуксонів - наявність багатошарових залізних пластин, які утворювали своєрідну броню, що покривала верхню палубу судна на кшталт панцира черепахи. Є припущення, що ці пластини були також оснащені гострими шипами. Усе це унеможливлювало взяття корабля на абордаж. Залізна броня, окрім цього, добре захищала від вогняних стріл і куль.

Довжина кобуксона складала, в середньому, 30 м. Корабель ніс на собі дві щогли та два великі вітрила латового типу. Окрім цього, судно було оснащене веслами (до 10 із кожного борту), що дозволяло розвинути додаткову швидкість.

Екіпаж корабля налічував 100-120 осіб, з яких половину складали веслярі.
